Located in the heart of France’s forest-rich Limousin region, the Saillat-sur-Vienne mill is where REY® paper comes to life. Our mill is dedicated to producing the paper that people depend on every day for so many uses. Do you know how paper is produced?
Thanks to our fully integrated mill, we can directly manage the pulp and paper manufacturing process, from wood to ream. Discover below how our paper is made.
1. From Timber to Wood Chips
Once the trees have been collected, the outer layer of the tree (the bark) is taken off. This is called debarking. It leaves a nice smooth wood and is later made into wood chips.
The bark is made into biomass fuel, which REY® use to power the mills that make their paper.

2. The Pulping Process
The wood chips are cooked with water, additives, and steam. This creates a pulp mixture (like a thick smoothie!) which is then bleached to create the white colour of paper.
During this process, a waste liquid called ‘black liquor’ is created. REY® use this as biofuel to produce energy to help power the machines.

To make the paper, first, the pulp has to be cleaned. Next, the pulp is sprayed onto forming wires in the paper making machine. Sometimes additives are added to make coloured paper.
Then the machine creates a long mat of pulp. (Think of it like a pulp red carpet of paper!)
The mat of pulp then goes to the press section, where it is flattened, and water is squeezed out.
Finally, the mat of pulp enters the drying section of the machine, where it is turned into a long mat of white paper (think of a never-ending runway of white paper!).

5. Distributors - The Paper Sellers
In the warehouses, batches of paper are made into smaller packs of paper which are then shipped to shops which sell REY® paper or to people who have ordered paper from REY® directly.
